Reviews
The Menger Hotel is a historic and charming establishment located in the heart of San Antonio, offering guests a unique experience with its rich history and close proximity to popular attractions such as the Alamo and Riverwalk. However, the hotel's aging infrastructure and ongoing construction in the surrounding area have led to some inconveniences and discomfort for guests, including issues with air conditioning, plumbing, and noise levels.

Oldest hotel in San Antonio! I thought it was a great place. Lots of old world charm with a great location and a pool. I didn't want for anything, the staff was helpful and it was very affordable.
- 4/5
everything was nice and clean. the room was just really warm.
- 3/5
Outrageously priced parking option considering the cheaper options close by, but at least it was well documented before arriving.
- 4/5
Exactly what you can expect from a historical hotel, quaint with character, but not updated. We only stayed one night and that was enough, as the A/C never cooled in our room. We didn’t report it and just made due, so can’t speak to the service that would have been rendered. Very central to all things San Antonio, so that was cool!
- 3/5
Dust caked the curtains. Bathroom tub leaked all night. The whole place looks tired.
- 4/5
Just a 1 night stay but was a nice stay. Short walk to everything
- 1/5
Hotel was old and lovely with history! Unfortunately it also resides as an old hotel! We were in a room that had an air conditioning issue. Then moved to another room
- 5/5
The hotel is old, that’s part of the charm. The rooms are large, outdated and also charming. It’s a vibe. We could have paid similar for a newer hotel but would lose out on the location, the pool, and the amazing staff. I will return to San Antonio and I will always stay at the Menger.
- 4/5
Pristine, well maintained historic hotel.
- 5/5
Not haunted!! Beautiful step b back in time!!

Every thing so close no need to walk far .

Rooms were hot even with the AC. Not sure if you knew it but don’t leave the blinds open on a sunny day when trying to cool a room. There were no ceiling fans in the room. T-Stat said 68 and felt like 98. There was no explanation that there would be stairs to get you not just to another floor but within the same floor to get to the side where your room is located. So did not see the purpose of the luggage cart if there was no ramp to accommodate. Definitely did not think of that when we said we needed a ADA room. So happy we were able to get our money back and booked at a much nicer, safer and colder hotel. Would not come back. That was not part of the historical feature we thought we were getting when we booked.

The hotel was awesome. My wife and I loved it first time staying there awesome Motel plus everything is walking distance. That’s what we love the most restaurants bars, entertainment souvenir shops awesome will be back again.

Beautiful historic hotel next to the San Antonio Riverwalk and The Alamo. The hotel staff and the facilities were wonderful. There's antique furniture throughout relative to the late 1800s when it was built. If we ever go that way again, we'll definitely stay there again. One floor is rumored to be haunted, which is not unusual for a place from that era. We had to change rooms more than once. The air conditioner was not working in the first room. The next room had a strange way to get to it because the elevator didn't go to that area. It would take too long to fully explain it.

It was ok for 1 night
- 5/5
Great people, excellent location
- 4.5/5
The taco restaurant downstairs was very good. The pool was nice and I loved the old Menger Bar. My room was nice and clean. Sure there was things like creaking floorboards and sinks that drip but what do you expect from a 150 year old hotel. More staff. Sometimes it was hard to find someone, and the bar having later hours. At least till 2 like most bars.

All in all, the stay was incredibly pleasant and satisfying, we intend to come back more often.
- 2/5
The air air-conditioning was out in the hotel. All of our lamps in our room were very dusty. No room service available and it was one of the listed amenities. All of the restaurants in the hotel that were listed were closed down except for one margarita taco bar thing that they had when I booked this hotel it was for our anniversary, I was very sad to find out that most of the amenities were not available. That was the total reason for booking the hotel was because of the amenities.

Cleaning staff we're not so friendly. Aircon in our suite didn't work properly. Room temp stayed at 75 during the day and 70 at night. Shower was dripping all night. Not sure if we won't stay here again.
- 5/5
Spacious room, amazing pool, and located right in the middle of everything. Perfect!!!
- 4/5
Valet parking easy n fast. Clean room.
- 4/5
Price of hotel was good. Staff was a little slow when called upon. Restaurant on sight is closed. Rooms need alot of upgrades.
- 0.5/5
Close to Alamo We received NO maid service WAS NOT told when we checked in that we had to request service
- 4/5
Great location and staff. Bed was comfortable and room was clean A/C wasn't working well and it was a very hot day. Hotel was full with concert goers so may have been struggling to cool all the rooms.
- 3.5/5
Close to the malls and attractions. Dusty, needs new mattress. Coffee maker in room wasn’t working. Hot in the room.
- 2.5/5
Hotel was beautiful and clean. Room was not cool. Ac struggled to keep up. It didnt cool off until after 1am.
- 5/5
The only down fall the tub drained slowly
- 3/5
Staff was absolutely wonderful only complaint was the ice machines didn’t work and the a/c in the rooms couldn’t keep up the history just ooozes out of everywhere, no ghost interactions but maybe next time!!!
- 3/5
The Menger is a wonderful looking hotel right next to the Alamo. It is a historical building with amazing museum like artifacts that are interesting to learn about. The problem we had was that the room we stayed in was in need of updating. It smelled stuffy and musty. The pillows were hard and uncomfortable. The bathtub had rust around the drain and the shower was weak. I hope they upgrade soon. As it is, I wouldn’t recommend it.
- 3/5
Bathrooms had mold on the ceiling and water pressure was awful. Parking is a challenge.
- 5/5
Charming old hotel, clean and great staff.
- 5/5
Gorgeous hotel and I got an awesome rate. The parking entrance was congested.
- 5/5
Location Lighting in the room at night
- 3/5
I love this hotel. Its history, beauty, price point. Unfortunately, its maintenence is lacking and it shows. Particularly the HVAC. My room never got below 83 degrees all night. I want to love this place again, but I love my sleep also!
- 5/5
Great hotel. Dining and room services are limited.
- 3/5

- 4/5
Good start was central and a min away from the mall or the Alamo

- 3/5
The rooms were good, but could use some updating. The drinks were outrageously expensive, even for a hotel.our group had 5 drinks at $150–and 2 of those were wine. The hotel offers only valet as parking at $69 per day. There are in-and-out “privileges”, but it’s expensive. There is paid parking nearby. The property is well located by the Alamo and the River Walk.
- 2/5
I would be more stars but A/C only, we couldn’t control to make room cooler in the day.
- 2/5
part of the hotel is just old and outdated and needs repairs! the shower was leaking something terrible, and there was some kind of blue terrible build up in the tub! then , the air was out, they did move us to another room after we complained that was nice, but they knew of the existing problem when we arrived and did not inform us, you also have to request to have your room cleaned, we had to request tp and clean towels! night manager was nice and so was the location!

- 5/5
The hotel was great it was just the annoying people around the area trying to sell timeshares. I told one guy no and he followed me into the hotel until I threatened to call the police on him.
- 4/5
I have stayed at the Menger many times over the years, It has always been great for the price. I would say that is starting to fade. The older side of the building could use a face lift. My suite had one bathroom that was extremely warm and damp, and the other was great except the shower would not engage. The Hotel restraunt no longer serving breakfast is also unfortunate.
- 3/5
The beds were not queen size, but I thought they would be- comfortable but tight for 2. The lobby and balcony was great. Overall happy for our first experience in San Antonio- also close to the River Walk!
- 4/5
Close to downtown and river walk, beautiful and historic Limited parking, our room did not have any shower soap. After we checked out we were told it has to be requested.
- 3.5/5
Location of property was great. Convent to local spots was good. The employees were friendly and helpful. Not adequate toilet paper available. Cleaning schedule was not made clear. No place to eat at the hotel.

Loved the history, atmosphere, amenities and stayed in old/original part of hotel. Getting to our room took a bit as one of the elevators was out of service and there were some air conditioning issues, but we had an excellent stay and I plan to stay here for all future trips to San Antonio.
- 5/5
Great stay no changes needed
- 4/5
The website seemed to indicate there was a restaurant for breakfast but there was not.
- 5/5
It’s a fun and neat place to stay. Smack dab in the middle of the downtown seconds away from the riverwalk and Alamo. I’ll definitely be staying here again
- 1/5
Our stay was not a comfortable stay the water from the shower was yellow corrosion water, the tub did not have a strainer. Parking was excessive
- 4.5/5

- 4/5
Great location to tourist attractions, Alamo, River Walk, etc. Less expensive option than other hotels in the area. Our room was fine for a place to sleep and shower.
- 5/5
No a/c in room my first night. Moved to New room my 2nd night
- 3/5
I just didn’t like that the don’t serve breakfast anymore ….. I had to go get my own
- 4/5
I loved everything about the hotel. I think my only complaint would be how expensive the parking is, and how they don’t offer complimentary breakfast after paying so much. Other than that, I would definitely come back again for the ghosts, vibes, and history 😁
- 5/5
A stay at The Menger was on our bucket list and we were not disappointed
- 5/5
Classic hotel, very historic, cool to walk around and see the artifacts, it's like a museum and hotel in one. Surely haunted too, don't be scared!
- 5/5
Rich in history! We loved the antiques and displays dating back to the 1800's. The room was charming and the bed was very comfortable. And it's next to the Alamo and within walking distance of the Riverwalk.
- 5/5
Great stay for families! Comfortable and convenient walk to riverwalk.
- 5/5
Everything is within walking distance downtown.
- 4/5
The room was nice and had a large patio that we enjoyed looking over towards the Alamo. The ac was broken but they comped our stay completely and gave us a fan in our room.
- 5/5
It's showing it's age a little more these days but still a great spot for fair price to be right in the middle of the Alamo area.
- 4/5
For the price, location and history, the hotel was great. Only downfall is that since it is an old historic building, the walls are thin, floors creak, plumbing is loud, water pressure for shower was weak and the temperature is never consistent. Other than that, I enjoyed the hotels architecture, history and location very much.
- 4/5
Room was clean, ac worked great. Was surprised about the deposit and valet parking upon arrival. Breakfast was okay, but must be bought.
- 1/5
The AC was out in our room. The staff gave us the runaround at first telling us they’d send a maintenance man right away…. After 30 minutes and no maintenance man I call back asking for a new room. The lady at the front desk said she’d find a new room for me and that she’d call me back. She never called back. I had to call her to tell her I was checking out and I needed a refund. The temperature in the room was reading 86 degrees.. mind you this was late July in San Antonio. I was so disappointed with this hotel. It’s a beautiful historic property, but I will NEVER stay here again.
- 5/5
Great location. Good hotel
- 2/5
Even worse was that the parking lot had no posted charges. and the signs s a I'd that if we left without registering on their qr code we be charged regardless and fined. After scanning the qr code the charge for parking was $45 + 11% surcharge

Is my favorite place to stay when it comes to visit San Antonio. I highly recommend it because everything is on walking distance. Love it.
- 5/5
Loved how fancy hotel was and all its amentities such as pool and gym. Loved how it was close walk distance to all of attractions like riverwalk etc
- 5/5
The only negative is the air conditioning…please get it fixed! Otherwise stay was excellent and I truly enjoyed the history!
- 2/5
Was there for a conference, was supposed to stay 2 nights. Ac was not working in a lot of the rooms, mine being one of them. Was booked into a king bed. Had the wife with me. Told that we were being transferred to the hotel across the street. Went from a king bed to double beds barely big enough for the both of us. I know it wasn't the hotel that we were transferred to fault, they weren't expecting it. Had originally booked a third night for the wife and I to stay after the conference was over. The room they put us in was in the historic side. 12 foot ceilings that some bug spent the night crawling all over because I couldn't reach it. The ac never got below 78. Very disappointed with the overall stay. Most of the staff were helpful. Forgot to mention that our first night there, we were outside at the new restaurant having dinner after finally getting checked in and got to watch a guy get stabbed.
- 5/5
The Hotel is amazing! The location is incredible and the pool was great. I had such a great experience!
- 3/5
Ac was an issue in the room and the hallway, ice machine broken, and vending machines $$
- 3/5
Initial room that we were assigned had a nonfiction AC unit. The staff was aware of some AC units not working. Room was at 85 degrees. They moved us to another room, but that AC would not cool below 72.
- 2/5
The housekeeping person told me they did. When I checked in, I was told by the front desk the same thing. When I get to the room, no freezer section so the specialty ice cream picked up was a waste of money. Also, there was a fan outside of the room when we got there. Inside the room was stuffy/warm and they has maintenance come "look at it". When we got back from our show, there was another fan set up in the room. I was told that I should have requested a new room (after 1030pm when we got back from the show), that the hotel was built in the 1800s and there are always temperature and plumbing issues. Someone also charged their bar bill to our room and my credit card was charged for it. The last straw was the front desk person acting like I was bothering her. We wont be back.
- 2/5
Staff wasn’t very nice, the tile around the pool was in bad shape and can cut you open, the AC wasn’t working it was 78 in our room and had to get fans. The rooms and hallway smelled like sewage. The shower bottom in the room was cracked too.
- 3/5
I have always liked this historic hotel, and have stayed there a few times over the decades. But I think that cleanliness has declined. The carpets on the stairs looked like they had not been vacuumed, the bathroom was dusty, the shower drain rusty, the tiled wall full of urine from a previous guest, the toilet bowl had dark rings as if it had not been cleaned, and the water pressure out of the shower head was so low it was impossible rinse hair.
- 4/5
It was well kept and found out supposed to be haunted. Liked that valet parking was offered at the hotel helps from driving around to find a parking space. The price was bit pricey $59, but reliable. The staff was very friendly both hotel and valet attendants. My only thing is they room we got was small, hot and stuffy. The a/c did not work that well, we tried lowering the temperature but it did not move. If we tried to go higher the a/c will go off and seems that the fan was only running.
- 3/5
Location is very good but hotel not maintained and it shows its age
- 5/5
Location was the best part. It’s an old hotel. It’s charming. Staff was great. Clean enough. It’s next to the Alamo and Riverwalk. I’d stay here again.
- 1/5
We left the ac didn’t work in our room no one answered the phone at the front desk the said they couldn’t move us as they were booked but there were rooms available on line. No one went to the room to check the ac worst time ever we wasted money on uber there and then back home we also lost out on Hopscotch since we had no cool place to stay before our 8pm time $50!!
- 2/5
The historic hotel was interesting and well maintained. The room was not so much- the bathroom tub leaked heavily all night keeping us up and the ac fab was just as noisy. Did not get much sleep at all. Mentioned it nicely to staff and they completed ignored me- with a drastic role of the eyes. Customer service was the worst I experienced in a very long while. Bummer!!
- 1/5
The air conditioning was out but we were not informed at check in. Took over two hours to get a fan.
- 3/5
Bar was cool. Good food and drinks; killer employees. The stay itself was subpar, nothing stood out though.
- 1/5
I have stayed at this property several times and each time it had been a wonderful experience until yesterday, we checked in and you could feel the heat in the hallways and lobby, not any ac, got in the room and they had a box fan going and the room temperature said 80, turned the ac on and set it to 70 and it never came on, we went out to eat and enjoy the city and came back 5 hours later and the room was hotter, the bathroom was like a sauna, called the front desk and told them about it asked if maintenance could do something, they said nothing could be done and they didn't know there was an issue and they could possibly move us to a different property, mind you its like 10:30 at night at this point, so nothing was done about the ac or lack of it so at 7 the next morning i said enough and checked out, and wouldn't you know there was other people checking out with the same issue, no ac at all in there room when its 108 outside, lucky for us the lady comped the room. Great historical property but they need to fix the AC issue this is Texas and its hot, yall know you have an issue so fix it!
- 4/5
I have stayed here multiple times. I love to stay here because of the history. Being the oldest hotel west of the Mississippi, it is probably not the nicest hotel in downtown, but to me it is the coolest. The location is super nice once you get there. Getting to the drop off area valet parking is always difficult and I forget how to get to it every time I stay. Easy walking distance to the Alamo, the mall, the riverwalk and tons of restaurants and bars. You must go to the bar at the hotel just to say you were in the bar where Teddy Rosevelt recruited the rough riders. We have stayed in the original section and have experienced “ghost” or heard things like kids laughing and playing in the hall @ 4am. We will stay here again.
- 1/5
No AC in room and they told us 4 days ago they would refund money.. yeah check is in the mail
- 3/5
We arrived and were excited about the stay, but immediately had to change rooms because we booked a King and they gave us double beds. After getting situated we had to move again because the A/C went out. Our third room had a wet floor. Bottom line … cool hotel that needs a lot of updating. Drop in and view the lobby after you check in at the Marriott or Hilton.
- 5/5
Best bar in San Antonio. The bar tenders are top notch and a great singer outside
- 4/5
The pool was not very clean this time when we stayed there. It was very green and not clear at all. And our bathtub was backed up. We called and they said they opened a ticket to have it unclogged but no one ever came to unclog it while we were still staying there.
- 5/5
This was our 5th stay at the Menger and we very much enjoy staying in the heart of San Antonio. It right across from the Alamo and the plaza. It is a short walk to the River Walk and even shorter to the mall. We went this time for the AC/DC Concert and eventhough it was hot, it was still a comfortable walk to the Alamodome. It is our favorite place to stay when we overnight in SA.
- 4/5
We love the hotel and have stayed there many times through the years. Will stay there again. I figure they are probably having some plumbing issues. Wish they’d have shut off that section of the hotel however.
- 5/5
Beautiful historical hotel in the center of downtown. The customer service was excellent considering the heat and long line for check-in, but they got the job done with smiles unending. Tiegen is the MAN!!;
- 5/5
All good great stay highly recommended
- 5/5
Clean room, great view! Amazing staff!
- 3/5
Cool hotel lobby and great location. That’s it. Our room was awful (the bathroom was the worst)—slow draining tub, mildew in the grout, a door missing on the closet, fixtures were rusty, the power cord was missing from the tv, and a weird mildewy smell permeated the entire room. I’m not a hotel snob-just ask my family- but with the premium price paid, I got a Motel 6 experience. Being close to everything was amazing, and you can’t beat the history of the hotel; however, the owners should care a little about the guest experience beyond the ghost tours.
- 5/5
Parking could have been a little cheaper.
- 1/5
The room was very hot! Worse two days of my stay at the Menger. Had to ask for a box fan but didn’t help. The staff at the Menger said I had to get with my third party since I booked the room through a third party.
- 3/5
Underwhelming, the hotel was excessively hot. Room was cool but the rest of the hotel was not air conditioned well. Hotel seems a bit tattered looking. The fees were tagged on after I thought I was paying one amount, then the bill came, seemed like to many fees. I prefer to know the complete cost when booked.
- 5/5
Great experience. Proper old hotels are to be respected and enjoyed
- 2/5
Granted it was hot in San Antonio and the hotel is older, but the AC was not functioning very well. It was warm in the room. They provided a fan, but basically felt like a blow dryer. Suggest staying here in the Fall or Spring on days where the high is in the low 80’s.
- 3/5
The AC was out on the second floor
- 4/5
Located steps from the Alamo, the hotel perfectly captures the spirit of old San Antonio. If you love historic vibes, character, and a sense of stepping back in time, the Menger Hotel is an unforgettable place to stay.

Wonderful stay! The property was exceptionally clean, comfortable, and very well maintained. The room was spacious, fresh, and had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our visit. Breakfast was delicious with a good selection, and the overall atmosphere of the property was pleasant and inviting. We also really enjoyed the bar and other amenities. The location was convenient, and everything about our stay felt smooth and enjoyable. Excellent hospitality and great value overall. We had a fantastic experience and would happily stay here again. Highly recommended!

Historic hotel, but it's especially a treat it's so beautifully decorated and has things like great water pressure which old buildings don't always have
