Reviews
Guests generally appreciate the hotel's proximity to local attractions and the kindness of the staff. However, parking issues and cleanliness concerns are frequently mentioned.
- Convenient location near tourist attractions
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Limited and expensive parking
- Cleanliness issues in rooms and common areas
- 5/5
It was very good with good location
- 2/5
The parking lot was on the other side of the hotel which required walking all the way around the building. There needs to be a gate that can be accessed for patrons of the hotel. We were charged $25.00 for parking which is ridiculous since we stayed at the hotel. It should have been free for hotel guests.

Former Old County Jail. Expecting some paranormal activities but dismayed because there's nothing out of the ordinary.
- 5/5
Affordable for a family, our room was clean, close proximity to the river walk and market square

Breakfast

This place genuinely surprised me. I was not expecting the level of comfort I enjoyed at this hotel. I had a king bed and if anyone figures out where these mattresses are from, please let me know because it's rare that I find a bed that my back doesnt hurt in LOL. The bed, pillows, blankets, were all so comfortable. The room comes with the best AC unit ive ever experienced. I run hot and there were times when I had to shut it off because I was cold. There is a microwave and a mini fridge. The room also has a safe which I like to have when I travel. The breakfast buffet also surprised me. It doesnt have a massive amount of options but everything they do have is honestly delicious. The little egg omlettes and sausage were a staple each morning and actually had flavor unlike alot of other hotel buffets. All of the staff are very lovely. Shout out to Ivette who was very helpful and kind during my stay. Also a shout out to Lucy who is in charge of breakfast, also very kind and helpful. The hotel has a coffee machine as well as a juice/water machine which was very nice being able to refill my water bottle each day. The hotel comes with a very picturesque pool, perfect temperature. The hotel is located super close to the river walk, the historic market square, the San Fernando Cathedral and tons more. Honestly, my only downside to the entire hotel was the cleanliness to the bathroom, but those are more aged stains than anything. I would absolutely stay here again.

The only thing I did not like was the elevator did not work when I was checking out and had to bring down all my luggage down the stairs.
- 3/5
Breakfast is terrible
- 2/5
Parking isn’t the best, breakfast was okay for it being included, the rooms are run down, and there’s stains on the bedding.
- 4/5
Comfortable
- 1.5/5
It would be nice if the phone number you have posted all over google worked.
- 4/5
Wonderful breakfast. Small pool to cool down in. (This could be colder). Helpful staff when we had questions.
- 5/5
Quick easy access to the river walk but not directly in the river so it was more quiet. Free parking.

Horrible service in managment. Ignoring calls. Messages and emails.
- 4/5
Staff was very friendly and helpful. They were able to let us check in early. Beds were very comfortable. We have an unexpected late night “visitor”. We’d turned off all lights while we slept but at 2 am two separate lights suddenly turned on. We had no clue this hotel was haunted or that it had once been a jail. Breakfast was adequate -standard eggs, sausage, and potatoes for hot selections. Disliked the lack of parking on site. You are given a parking pass to a lot around the corner but there is no connecting path to the hotel so you have to walk around the block. We found it best just to park and uber/ walk where we wanted to go as the parking and one way streets make driving on the area difficult.
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
The only thing I didn't like was the front door is steps only. So it can make it difficult to bring in luggage. There was a handicap ramp on the side but the door is locked for safety reasons. Which I totally understand.
- 4/5
Didn't like Air conditioner up high the air blasted you. The elevator takes forever. The rooms were nice and quiet. Not a bad place to stay.
- 3/5
Breakfast was ok Attractions not to far Having to pay 20 dollars extra to park my car and not even on the premises had to drive around the corner!
- 1/5
When we arrived, the parking area next to the hotel was very dirty and looked neglected. The check-in area was also in poor condition, with old, worn, and dirty seating. There was only one elevator, and it was very dirty as well. Once we got to our room, things did not improve. The bathroom looked old and poorly maintained, the tissue box only had two tissues left in it with no extra provided, and the shower had mold. The room itself felt old and dirty, and the hallways were also unclean. Even the outside of the hotel looked run-down. Overall, this was a very bad experience and definitely not what I expected based on the photos.
- 3/5
Not enough handicapped parking available
- 5/5
Comfortable bed with good pillows, clean room & bathroom, and great attention from the staff
- 3/5
It was ok the break was good but after two days . I asked for doom service and the staff never came . The house keeper said she was coming right after she cleaned one room. . Never came it would have been ok if I could only get room service one of the days , so I ended up leaving early, cause who want to be somewhere we’re the staff don’t want to clean the room. I never experienced anything like it . I called twice no one came. And even talked to the cleaning staff left . And still didn’t get room service. Other than that it’s ok just to get rest . And breakfast was good
- 5/5
Great staff!
- 5/5
The room was clean and nice. The breakfast was really good.
- 5/5
Everything was great
- 5/5
I like about the building. Was it a history behind it? I always make sure a good story. Everything was great but the parking is different but for a reason
- 4/5
Ac was loud on and off. Water temp in shower took a while to stabilize .
- 0.5/5
They never refunded my parking fee or $100 deposit.
- 4.5/5
Clean, comfortable, breakfast and coffee, affordable
- 4/5
The pool is too small. Parking was not on site
- 4/5
Estuvo bien
- 4/5
Good breakfast and a clean room. However, the front desk area felt too small, and the carpet in the hallway on my floor (the third floor), near my room, was partially dirty. Overall, the stay was comfortable but there is room for improvement in the common areas.
- 4/5
Room had a musty smell, but was given febreze and it was fine. Breakfast was good. Staying in the old jail was cool. Nice pool.
- 5/5
Was an amazing stay they only thing was the lowest number for the ac was 68 other then that amazing !!
- 0.5/5
Nothing Breakfast the was same every day. No variation. Elevators are slow, maybe all not in service. I was traveling from overseas and got charged an exorbitant amount for checking in late. Poor customer service.
- 5/5
What we didn’t know, until we checked in, was that it is a historic building as a State Antiquities Landmark. It was formerly a county jail with the gallows & trapdoor. We also found out later that is one of the stops on the Ghost Bus Tour by the Sisters Grimm.
- 5/5
Nice place to stay. Staff was excellent.
- 1/5
Elevator was not working and parking location was too far from the hotel. Also, the hotel had an unfresh smell.
- 4/5
The bed and pillows were so comfortable but beware that there is a $20 daily parking charge that is mentioned once you arrive at check-in and you must park around the block in a lot behind the hotel. Location is great though, just disappointed in the parking arrangements they contract with the lot.
- 4/5
Staff were helpful. The breakfast was good and plenty of options. The rooms were spacious and clean. No parking on site though. It’s around the corner. Which for us it was no big deal.
- 5/5
It was a great hotel, very clean and close to everything we did around the downtown area
- 1/5
The rooms were very very old they smell like mold. I have a seven-year-old daughter with asthma. I sent him a message and then I never got a reply back. I also have a six month old baby that the rooms were so sold those those rooms are the beds were so old and dirty. The showers were with mode black mode and the ACs was not working. I had it on 70 and the temperature showed that it was 75. I do not recommend this hotel at all unless that’s you’re like last option but it’s horrible never again.

Great location Elevator not working and did not observe wheelchair ramp
- 1/5
The breakfast was the only good thing about this place.. The parking is ridiculous and pricey; the rooms were very dirty and very hot.
- 4/5
Elevator was slow
- 1/5
Couldn’t stay there wasn’t for me
- 5/5
Everything was perfect
- 4/5
Everything in the property was clean and good..
- 5/5
The entrance could have used a little love
- 3/5
Hotel was clean and the bed was very comfortable. We only there for one night. The hotel is not very handicap friendly, there is a ramp on the side of the building but on date we were leaving there was a truck there blocking the driveway and you could not use the ramp. That was my biggest negative on this hotel.

I recently booked a stay with Holiday Inn express in San Antonio Texas. We had the worst experience with them. First the room was filthy, dirty and smells bad. We woke up for breakfast which closes at 9:30am. My husband was at the dining room at 9:25 fixing his coffee before getting his food. By the time he got to the food, the rudest lady working there took away all the food trays to the kitchen without letting him get his food. She noticed and ignored him. She should not be working in a hospitality business where she can ruin people’s vacation experience. Please take a look at this incident as we complained to the front desk and they witnessed the whole incident.
- 3/5
Breakfast was great Didn't like that parking was around the corner they should put a key gate closer to not have to walk all around
- 4/5
It was quiet
- 3/5
The keys would not work...had to go to the lobby
- 5/5
The staff was nice and courteous. Answered any questions I had Parking is separate from the hotel and you don’t know that unless you call.
- 4/5
I wasn’t aware it was a remodeled prison, but it was nice.
- 5/5
Everything was fine.
- 0.5/5
The room was too small, and the elevator broke down. Me and my family had to go up and down 5 flights of stairs. The front desk girl was terrible. She was too busy on her phone to care. She did give us a room on the first floor but that room smelled very bad.
- 3/5
Everything was good except the elevator not working. We were on the top floor (5th floor) and the elevator quit. With my health I’m not able to even make it up one flight of stairs . My husband’s health isn’t to much better and he had to make 3 trips up and down stairs the stairs moving our things. Staff did put us in a room on first floor but only discounted my stay by giving free parking which came out to about 65$.
- 4/5
Small property,a little run down and parking is around the corner, you have to walk, breakfast is great and better than bigger hotels, staff very friendly and helpful. :)
- 2/5
The rooms look very dated and have an odor. My room key had to be reprogrammed 3 times.
- 5/5
Excelente servicio!!!
- 2/5
The hotel had no parking on site. Almost everything on the breakfast was broken. Pool was closed indefinitely. One of our rooms had a moldy wet carpet. We did not want the room and they refused to refund.
- 1/5
The pool wasn’t open, the pancake machine wasn’t working and it wasn’t easy to get in and out of.
- 2/5
Hello, before booking this hotel there are a few things you should know. The location is not ideal, though still acceptable. The beds and towels are comfortable and clean, but the rest of the hotel is dirty. The breakfast is very poor and of terrible quality. The pool is listed as closed for maintenance, but honestly it looks like it has been out of use for a long time. These are points that should be clearly disclosed to guests. Frankly, for the level of service provided, the prices are too high. It is truly disappointing to see a Holiday Inn in these conditions offering such poor service.
- 5/5
Clean room, breakfast air conditioning
- 4/5
Stay was excellent, overall. Breakfast was a great variety. Coffee is really good and served 24/7. Staff is extremely accommodating. Everything wias always stocked. Room was nice and quiet. The pool was not open for Memorial Weekend. Construction on the street of the hotel. Price was very reasonable for what we needed for a quick, memorable weekend.
- 5/5
Our 3 night stay was great! The staff was courteous. The breakfast was above average with coffee available at all times. Convenient walking distant to San Fernando Cathedral, Market, river walk, would stay again.
- 5/5
Great location
- 3/5
This hotel is not wheelchair friendly!!!! It has one steep narrow ramp on the side of the building down a narrow alley that is located towards the back of the hotel. If you don’t reserve a handicap parking you won’t get one. My poor mom is in a wheelchair and had the hardest time getting around. She ended up just staying in the room the whole weekend. Parking is horrible you have to get a key card to park a block away then return it to the front desk. Every time you move your vehicle the key card must be returned to the front desk. You have been warned!!!
- 1/5
Parking is super confusing, there is a lot that doesn't look connected to the hotel itself where parking is accepted but a pain in the butt to transport luggage along the city street. Could use better signage around the property or clearer instructions when booking. Going in and out is not really an option here because parking is so inconvenient.
- 5/5
This is a historical building.
- 5/5
Great location, close to major attractions. Delicious breakfast with a lot of options.
- 5/5
En si fue muy bueno en todo ubicación limpieza y amabilidad buen desayuno personal muy atento lo único yo pondría aromatizantes en las habitaciones
- 3/5
No parking in the hotel & I pay $30.00 😬

I am updating this review because, after weeks of attempting to follow up — multiple phone calls, emails, and leaving my phone number directly with the property — I have received absolutely no response. The staff on the morning of checkout were unhelpful and rude. This hotel has shown it has no intention of taking responsibility. Here is what happened: We checked into a room with an overwhelming urine odor. When I bent down near the bed, the smell was so intense it was unmistakable — the mattress was heavily saturated with urine. My two small children and I had already been on that bed. The room also had hair ties on the floor from a previous guest, a visible water stain in the toilet, and clear evidence it had not been properly cleaned. We were moved to a new room and offered 2,000 IHG points — roughly $10 — as compensation. We lost hours of our Mother's Day repacking and showering everyone down. We missed our Riverwalk dinner reservation. There was no sightseeing. I was up every hour through the night sick. The staff who handled the room swap were polite — I want to be fair about that. But politeness doesn't excuse putting a family with small children in a biohazard room, and silence doesn't make it go away. I have escalated to IHG corporate. Families traveling with children: inspect your room thoroughly before settling in, and think twice about this property.
- 5/5
Helpful staff, clean and within walking distance to historic San Antonio.
- 5/5
The breakfast was hot and filling! They had omelets, even egg white omelettes one of the mornings and while they dont have these Texas Waffles anymore, they do have pancakes & real honey! and they also have bagels & cream cheese :) The rooms were clean and smelled fresh! The water coming from the tap did initially smell mouldy but after leaving hot water on for a minute, it dissipated. Just a 10 minute stroll down the area to the riveewalk or a 7$ lyft ride back.
- 3/5
The property has no on-site parking unless you are a diamond member, you have to pat $20 to park in a parking lot around the corner that you have to walk to
- 3/5
Once we entered the room there was a moldy / musty smell. Asked for a different room but they only had one left right beside the elevator and that room smelled even worse. Hotel needs some renovation. All in all it was manageable for just one night.
- 4/5
Clean room but small. Read the fine print as parking is around the corner at $20 per night. Breakfast good but limited. Best Western is better.
- 1/5
The room was just OK but the bathroom was filthy. I had to clean the toilet myself. We didn’t eat breakfast there, but unfortunately I won’t be staying at this property again.
- 5/5
I really don't have anything bad to say except for one thing the elevator, Hotel only has one elevator and SUPER SLOW. The best way to get to the lobby or your room really fast is by taking the stairs.
- 4/5
Fairly good location. Fairly clean.
- 5/5
Excellent
- 4/5
Room was very clean, staff was friendly, coffee was freshly ground and hot.

- 5/5
The staff were really great and accommodating. The room was clean. Overall had a comfortable stay.
- 5/5
Excellent!! All the way around
- 1/5
Not clean
- 4/5
The only thing I think 🤔 the dinning area would be a little bigger thats all.
- 3/5
Staff was courteous. Room was nice for the value. Breakfast was warm as advertised. Parking was a nightmare! Had to pay for parking that wasn't on the property & had to "borrow" a fob from the desk to come & go from the lot. Property was within walking distance of the Riverwalk/Alamo/dining. Wouldn't recommend this property with so many other options in the area.
- 5/5
Good location, everything as described!
- 5/5
Stayed 3 days and they had 3 different choices each day!
- 4/5
Staff was nice, rooms were clean, breakfast was good.

Clean room/great breakfast/AC
- 5/5
Clean room, breakfast, convenient location

Room was clean.

Staff is outstanding. Parking to unload not good for older guests. Cars parked everywhere in no parking zones. Room was nice and breakfast was great
- 5/5
Clean and spacious king bed room
- 5/5
Awesomely
- 4/5
Nice place close to the river walk
- 5/5
The Lady at the Front Desk was Extremely Helpful! She was very understanding and went above and beyond to help us. Very Thankful for that!
- 5/5
It was a great stay. Pretty close to the Riverwalk. Great History about the building.
- 4/5
rooms and property were clean. AC worked great. Only complaint there no vending machines and no water or drinks available to purchase other than bottles of Sprite had to walk to 7/11 to get water
- 4/5
Breakfast was decent, good cinnamon rolls and coffee. Room was clean and AC worked good
- 5/5
Todo el hotel está muy bien
- 1/5
The 1st front desk clerk was struggling to use the new system. We were given a dirty room. The next room had mold in the shower and the carpet had a mild odor. While the cleaning crew was polite, they did not speak English. Which made hard to explain what you needed done. Every day we had to have our keys reactivated. Several of the front desk clerks were unprofessional and tones were rude and or condescending. I asked for a bottle of water and was told it's for the paying customers. Like I didn't pay to stay there. I will NEVER use Holiday Inn Express again. Nor will I refer anyone else to this horrible hotel,.
- 4/5
After reading reviews, I was skeptical. However, parking was not an issue. Yes, you park behind the building, but there are sidewalks that are lighted. We saw very few unhoused people. Location is perfect. Walking distance to many restaurants and stores. Everything worked and was clean. Staff was very friendly. Will stay here again.
- 2/5
Clean room. Only thing toilet was not standard size! I’m short and it was still too low for my height!!! Ac needs updating!!! Staff was very nice! breakfast ok bananas were not fresh! The worst part is having to get a Parking tag to go in and out!!! Needs better parking situation! Unfortunately we will not stay at this location again!!!!
- 4/5
Room was clean but I will say that I was wanting better lighting. it was all ambient and lovely - but dang hard to put on makeup. My other hurdle was the parking situation. it's around the corner and to save some money you pay the hotel (as opposed at the lot gate) and use the hotel badge - borrowing it to get it (returning it immediately) and borrowing again to leave returning it immediately that means driving around the block because of the one way street - it's something you should be aware of
- 3/5
Hair around in bathroom. Motel style ac in room. Bare minimum breakfast. It has devolved from Holiday Inn service to a typical Shyam property.
- 5/5
Good
