Reviews
The Magnolia Hotel in downtown Houston is generally well-regarded for its location, staff, and amenities, but some guests have expressed concerns about cleanliness, parking, and value for money. The hotel's historic charm, rooftop pool, and complimentary breakfast are frequently mentioned as pros, while cons include slow elevators, poor sound insulation, and issues with parking and valet service.
- Great location in downtown Houston
- Friendly and attentive staff
- Parking is expensive and limited
- Some rooms have cleanliness and maintenance issues

The only issue the site on Expedia referenced pets stay free; they do not. Other than that the staff is awesome!

Love to stay at this hotel as our local get away. Staff is courteous and prompt, amazing cleanliness and atmosphere relaxing for downtown Houston. Only negative is the breakfast (buffet) for the price it needs to be fresh. Eggs soggy, sausage cold pancakes were not cooked thoroughly ( still wet inside). Will stay again just eat breakfast elsewhere. See ya next time!

Ok, check-in was a nightmare. I’m not blaming the receptionists but the process could have gone a little smoother. We were told our room was not ready at the 4:00 check-in time. We arrived shortly before 5:00 pm. We did not get into our room until 7:30. Two free drink tickets were received for our troubles. The drinks were gone by 6:00. An hour and a half later we were called and told our room was ready. It was not the room I reserved. After straightening things out at reception we finally get to our room. The rest of the stay was pleasant. If you ask to use the free shuttle that will only drive you within one mile of the hotel without cost, they acted very inconvenienced. No worries, we still used the shuttle and still tipped well. As for the breakfast, over $30 a plate for a pretty common but slightly upscale hotel continental breakfast. I will say the coffee was good, but the breakfast was 7 out of 10. If we stayed another night we’d have found another spot in downtown to eat. Overall, I think I would give another hotel in the downtown area a chance before booking here again. But if it were my last option, I guess I’d take it.
- 5/5
Definitely will be coming back! Great location to everything and loved the free shuttle service.

Good Breakfast

Valet parking staff was great. Vending machines were minimal. No food available to purchase in the hotel after 11. Would have been much better if there were a place to purchase snacks and whatnot at any time of day.
- 2/5
After waiting until 6:30pm to get into our room because they weren’t cleaned yet, I had to clean out the bathtub myself. It was pretty nasty. The staff gave us a pass for two drinks but I feel we should’ve been compensated with something else for our time and the inconvenience. We were in town for an engagement party that started at 5pm, and didn’t get there until 7pm. I had to get ready in the bathroom downstairs by the lobby.

Hotel is situated in a great spot for exploring Houston. Room was good, hot water was an issue. It was either blistering hot or just barely above cold. Otherwise the hotel is just fine.

I was denied access even though there was nothing wrong with my booking and when I tried to file a claim I was rejected without the opportunity to defend myself.

The hotel was beautiful and conveniently located. The nightly cookies and milk was a sweet touch! The only thing was the pool was not as clean as the rest of the hotel. The tile looked to be dirty and the water was not as clean. The bubbles didn’t work in the hot tub either.
- 5/5
Had a great time with family and hotel was very relaxing and enjoyable
- 5/5
Nice older hotel with super helpful staff. Bathrooms have huge tubs!
- 4/5
Nice hotel conveniently located. Check in time was 4:00. My wife and I arrived at 4:35. We had to wait until 5 to get out room because they didn't have a room ready. Air flow in room could have been better.

Nice Hotel , Quiet and Easy access to downtown
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel in downtown Houston. Our only complaints and the reasons for 4 stars was that the parking was very expensive and the AC was not able to be set as cool as we’d prefer. Good location and plenty of restaurant choices.

Parking $$$, dated facilities, staff was good (not great).
- 4/5
I loved everything the only thing was the sheets & towels smelt weird
- 4/5
Hotel was fine except our room shower drained very slowly and the sliding door between bathroom and bedroom did not slide very easily.
- 4/5
Don’t order the room service they do not bring it for an hour or more and not everything’s included and it’s all in to go wrapping.
- 5/5
The hotel is always clean, comfortable, and welcoming. I especially love the convenient downtown location, which is within walking distance of great restaurants, attractions, and Minute Maid Park. It made exploring the city easy and enjoyable. A special thank you to the bartender, ‘R’ who served breakfast during my stay. The service was outstanding, friendly, and welcoming each morning. Great customer service can make all the difference, and it certainly added to my birthday experience. Another favorite tradition of mine is the nightly cookie social. It’s one of the many unique touches that makes the Magnolia stand out and keeps me coming back year after year. Thank you to the entire staff for making my birthday stay so enjoyable. I highly recommend the Magnolia Hotel to anyone visiting Houston and look forward to staying again soon.
- 5/5
We had a great experience at the Magnolia. The only thing was that there wasn’t an ice machine on every floor .
- 3/5
This hotel is nice and the rooms are clean and spacious. For the money and location, it is overall a decent hotel. Main drawbacks are the lack of self-serve parking which requires you to pay the 54$ a day valet fee or brave the second drawback: the homeless people living right outside of the hotel. They were everywhere on the block of the hotel, including one next to the doors and one had even out a curtain up against the service door of the hotel to sleep. We understand that the world is full of these kind of problems but staying at a hotel surrounded by obvious dr*g use and homelessness was obviously less than ideal and put a damper on our stay. This is a hotel that has all the average amenities that the majority of hotels have nowadays: fitness center, pool, bar, breakfast (not included in the cost of the room and no option to do that) so it seemed to us to not really be worth the trouble of worrying whether we were going to get from the hotel to our car and back safely or that our car would get broken into overnight.
- 4/5
Breakfast the second day was excellent on the third day it was poor had to wait 40 minutes to get plates for breakfast buffet and coffee and I had to go ask someone to assist. There was no fresh fruit. Valet service was excellent.
- 5/5
Great view from the pool deck, room was clean and quiet, great location a short walk to Daikin park. Staff was friendly and helpful. Great value for the price. Definitely staying here again.
- 5/5
I love this hotel. It's lovely and well priced. My only complaint is the AC is so loud - but otherwise love it.
- 5/5
The staff was exceptionally helpful throughout our stay. Check-in and check-out were both quick and hassle-free, which made the entire experience even more enjoyable. The valet attendants were polite, professional, and very efficient—they had our vehicle ready promptly whenever we needed it. We also enjoyed the breakfast buffet, which offered a good variety of options and was a great way to start the day. Overall, the Magnolia Hotel provided excellent service, a comfortable stay, and a convenient downtown location. We would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
The TV in my room didn't work, and the Maintenance person went above and beyond to make sure the TV worked.
- 5/5
Everything was great. The location was great and the hotel parking was easy, and affordable compared to most hotel parking.
- 4/5
Clean room and courteous staff
- 5/5
Great hotel. Enjoyed our stay.
- 5/5
Staff was very helpful and welcoming. Bravo!
- 3/5
The building is not well maintained. They still have the original single pane windows that open, which seems like a tremendous safety hazard not to mention they make it really hot. Our window on the 12th floor was broken and “fixed” with tape. The first room had a broken a/c so we got a new room with a broken window and stained carpet. The whole building smells musty, moldy and gross. Tons of dings and scratches all over walls and even ceilings???? How does that happen? I called the number to the restaurant and was transferred FOUR times before someone would take my order. Anyhow, food was decent and staff was nice but the facility itself needs better upkeep.
- 2/5
Additionally, I was not informed that a prom event would be taking place the evening of my arrival. The event significantly impacted the atmosphere and guest experience, including changes to the restaurant service. Instead of the expected dining experience, the restaurant was relocated to another space that felt more like a pickup area than a proper restaurant setting. Had these conditions been communicated in advance, I would have had the opportunity to make a more informed decision regarding my accommodations.
- 4/5
Suggestions & Ideas; The smallest details matter. Need a microwave in room along with frig. Lil scraps of wet paper was left in bathroom and the bumper on bathroom door was falling off. Overall was a good visit
- 5/5
Loved the property will be coming back
- 4/5
I feel like the way the room was set up the air conditioning flow wasn’t the best.
- 5/5
The location is great. The room is spacious and clean.
- 5/5
Beautiful, staff Is great.
- 5/5
There was breakfast buffet and menu options available. The breakfast had great quality!
- 5/5
Clean room, nice staff
- 4/5
Front desk personnel pleasant and accommodating. The food was surprisingly good but the “room service” is basically food delivery in plastic containers.
- 5/5
Everything was so nice, clean and very vintage. Would definitely stay there again.
- 4/5
Clean rooms, excellent service, close to everything downtown
- 1/5
Do not stay here. The photos are catfish and the reviews myst be paid because it was dirty, smelly, and not to the standard they claimed. I will never stay here again. This hotel was awful!
- 3/5
Room was not what was expected. Pictures on website were misleading. The handicap shower was ok, but the water poured on to the tile floor making it very slippery. Staff was not knowledge on shuttle times
- 5/5
I was extremely impressed with the staff and the cleanliness of the Magnolia. The customer service was exceptional and it was the first time in a while where “extras” are included in the stay. They had a shuttle that was always available when I needed it, breakfast was provided and it was a lovely restaurant dining experience. They offered complimentary water and coffee in the lobby, as well as complimentary water bottles in the rooms. The cleaning service was great. The entire staff was friendly and responsive. I will definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
Clean room, great staff.
- 3/5
The ac was not very cold I believe it wasn’t working well it was a bit warm in our room
- 4/5
Overall good experience
- 4/5
There are elevator delays as the elevators are old and slow and not sufficient for the size of the hotel. Ours were not working most of the time we were there for a wedding. the stairways were dirty and smelly and even the hallways in the hotel had a bad smell.
- 5/5
The food menus were lacking in variety and appeal. The pozole I ordered consisted of only broth, dried out meat and garbanzo beans- it was tasteless. I was expecting more Texas or southern dishes to be offered. There was no option for decaffeinated coffee anywhere in the hotel, except the in-room coffee. For the price, the hotel turned out to be a disappointment.
