Reviews
The hotel staff is generally friendly and helpful, with a convenient location for downtown events. However, the property is outdated and cleanliness is inconsistent across rooms.

The staff was great! I had an issue with my reservation initially but the front desk and social media team were able to accommodate the error I had made quickly and efficiently. They walked me to my room and showed me where all the items I needed were at. I was 100% impressed with the team. Although I really didn't need it, I was never given the WIFI information. Having that along with my reservation information at check in would have been nice.

It was truly awful, smelled terrible, everything broken down, room door wouldn’t close, management awful and unhelpful Honestly, there was nothing to like. It was horrible and I’m not sure how it’s allowed to operate smelling and looking like that

Unfortunately my room didn't have cold water, so it was impossible to wash my face or hands with hot water. I had to use a water bottle to be able to wash my face. One of the windows blinds was not working properly but they told me that the hotel is undergoing renovations. Housekeeping also did a poor job cleaning my room but the staff were responsive and reactive when i complained about that.

The staff were nice and friendly. There was free water and coffee and tea down at the lobby. The hotel was clean. Public transportation was really close by ( bus and tram). The room was very spacious. All the appliances were working well. It has a fridge, a coffee machine, a microwave, a stove, an oven and kitchenware. Parking was about $25 the rooms were refurbished so it wasn’t too bad I enjoyed the convenience of being right in downtown

Great experience clean friendly and close to the ballpark for game days! Walking distance

The clean room , bed and linens . The owner was friendly and helpful during the stay, but not before that (see below what I didn't like) If you arrive and the owner is not there, the staff doesn’t know the computer system and can’t check you in. Back in December 2025, I booked a 12-day stay for Jun 2026. Due to a technical glitch (browser refresh), the reservation dates changed, and I did not notice before confirming my stay (my bad). After receiving the confirmation email, I realised it and immediately requested a cancellation through the booking platform and contacted the manager (it is a family-owned and managed hotel). The manager, a family member, hid behind their own policy of not allowing cancellations and refused to cooperate, costing me over $2,000. This was still 7 months before the intended stay and barely a couple of hours after booking. In no way a last-minute change. I have never seen such greedy and heartless behaviour from someone who runs a hospitality business. Clearly forgotten the meaning of "hospitality". I hope this review deters a few of you from booking here, just to illustrate the silliness of this penny-wise, pound-foolish behaviour.

Terrific Hotel & Stay! Wonderful staff and clean, beautiful room. Don’t let the exterior fool you, this hotel is a diamond & in a great location. Thank you!

Very friendly staff. Justin was very helpful.

The property was absolutely incredible! The bed was really comfortable and the staff were really nice! There was also a kitchen as well even g was really useful! I had an incredible stay and I’d definitely stay here ago if I’m visiting Houston!

Location No USB outlet in the room

Great location right by the Toyota center. Very comfortable and clean room. I wish the parking lot wasn’t so far away. The one right next to the hotel does not belong to them and the st the time the site to pay for it would not work.

It was about what I’d expect from a 2-star hotel. The room I stayed in was clean, and they cleaned it every day for the 4 days and nights I stayed. The main thing I didn’t like was the premium price, but I realized I was paying for the convenience of being a 12-minute walk away from the George R Brown Convention Center, which is why I was there. It was nice to have a full kitchen. If the TV experience of a hotel is your jam, you might not like this one, as the TV in my room was a Roku TV without any subscriptions, but more importantly, it was extremely slow, laggy, and buffered frequently. I used my wifi hotspot and laptop to entertain myself instead. The bed was as comfortable as any other hotel bed I’ve stayed in and was comfortable enough for me, which says a lot because I’m a memory foam enthusiast who doesn’t like these types of mattresses in the first place. The staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, I’d rate this as a good experience with a few things that are less desirable but manageable for a short stay.
- 5/5
Nice kitchen. Parking next door. Clean, recently remodeled. Helpful staff. No breakfast. But there’s a fantastic market two blocks away. Will stay again.
- 5/5
Staff was extremely friendly. Can't believe the hotel was so cheap for a weekend night!
- 5/5
Yes, there is a handicaped spot right out front that made it very easy to get in and out.
- 5/5
Clean, friendly staff and super close to Toyota Center. Walkable to many restaurants/bars.
- 5/5
Close by
- 5/5
This place is wonderful. Right in downtown. We went for NBA game and it is one street from Toyota Center. Staff is very friendly and helpful to find places and transportation. Rooms were clean. Plenty of hot water. We would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Close to everything. Small room but cozy.
- 4/5
Older place. Clean. Parking near by
- 5/5
Very friendly staff, thank you John who checked me in
- 4/5
Very nice staff, the room was spacious and very clean, it is a small hotel so the staff is very attentive to all the guests, the area has restaurants and a great grocery/deli store nearby. The only issue I had was to reach them by telephone, but they are responsive by email.
- 4/5
I actually really enjoyed my stay and I would stay here again however when I did walk in the room, there was a slight odor, secondly, there’s no full length mirror so I couldn’t check my outfit, third there is no elevator so be prepared to walk upstairs, fourth there is no immediate on-site Parking, parking is literally several blocks away so be prepared to walk other than that. The suite was nice. The staff was accommodating. It’s literally two minutes away from the Toyota center so if you wanna wear heels to your concert, you can!!!!!!
- 5/5
Great affordable place to stay. Convention Center and Toyota Center only 2-3 blocks away. While they may lack some amenities of a chain hotel, the staff’s friendliness and accommodating efforts are great. Very quiet and safe place to stay. Would definitely stay again.
- 2/5
I just didn't like have a dirty bathtub and toilet. It was hard to sleep with loud air conditioner and then construction working right at 7:00am on a Saturday
- 5/5
It was not the nicest hotel, but the price and service were great and was super easy to get places.
- 5/5
The manager was extremely helpful to me. Every time I’m in Houston for business I stay at the Athens. My first stay there was about ten years ago.
- 5/5
Room was spotless, staff very friendly and helpful and excellent location for a concert at Toyota Center. Thanks John for taking care of our stay!
- 5/5
Staff was very helpful and made sure at every step that the stay was easy. Great location to Toyota Center.
- 4/5
Room and staff were great! Outside can be very deceiving, inside is great. Only downside is paying 25 for a parking voucher to park 2 blocks down in a lot with no cameras.
- 4/5
Room was clean and smelled nice. Staff was excellent and friendly. Mattress needed to be replaced, bit of a divot on one side.
- 1/5
Upon arrival at the hotel, the Hotel door was locked and I was unable to go inside to check in. I called multiple times to the front desk with no answer. Since we were doing activities nearby, I paid for parking in the lot adjacent to the Hotel.
- 1/5
There was no internal chain or bar lock on the door. And Sunday morning at about 3:30, someone (a staff member, I think) tried to let themself in. He opened the door (i'm guessing with a master key or new key card he made downstairs). I loudly shouted "NO! GET THE **** OUT!" and he finally left. Not safe for guests! Expedia should drop this listing immediately because of the danger the hotel poses to guests.
- 5/5
Location and parking were ideal for a Saturday night outing. The hotel is not eye candy, but very comfortable and the staff were very helpful. The bed was not a great mattress, but sufficient. The kitchen is well equipped and would have been perfect for a longer stay.
- 2/5
I made a 4 day non-refundable reservation via Expedia. Due to weather problems with airlines I arrived on day 3 and expected my room to be available. It had been reassigned. Although I got a room, it was of lesser grade than what I reserved and paid for. The contract via Expedia made no mention of requiring a call for late arrivals.....only if I wanted to change my reservation which I didn't. Hotel staff argued with me about this point that I should not have expected to still have the room even though I had a non-refundable fee. The TV in my room #208 had no remote control to operate it. Coffee maker in lobby had no creamer or sugar to add to coffee. Lobby is not attended at all hours and sometimes did not get a response from locked lobby door with doorbell. My lost luggage being delivered from airport required two separate deliveries because of this. No USB ports were in room to charge my phone, but hotel staff helped me on this by charging my phone in their office. Price on the room was good and I liked the proximity to the Convention center.
- 1/5
The only thing that resembles a good hotel is the room price.
- 5/5
Hello, my name is Lucas! It was a great stay! The toilet did not work for one day but the issue was quickly resolved! The manager Ioanna (John) and his son George were very warming and friendly. I would love to stay with them again!
- 3/5
The staff was beyond welcoming. The location was great. Close to everything so we were able to walk everywhere. The room was pretty small which was okay for use but the only issue I had was the water pressure. We were on the seconded floor and there was basically no water pressure at all. Just something to keep in mind if you have thick hair because the struggle was real!
- 5/5
Excellent service with great staff
- 5/5
The staff is amazing and so is the property
- 5/5
Great staff! Very helpful and friendly. Allowed me to check in a few hours early. Wanted to move to another room, due to noise on the ceiling fan, they help me with that too. Rooms are spacious and equipped with full stove, fridge and microwave. Easy walk to Toyota Center and George R.Brown convention center
- 4/5
It was pretty clean. Nice & quiet. The staff were also nice & helpful.
- 3/5
Still not sure why Athens the hotel insists on keeping the keycard after check out. I like to keep y keycard and destroy as it has all my personal information. Strange and unnecessary rule.
- 5/5
Very convenient to George Brown Convention Center and Toyota Center! Walkable to bars and restaurants downtown. Victor at check-in was very friendly and helpful. The renovation is fantastic, and the kitchenette is an added bonus.
- 5/5
Friendly, helpful staff. Well presented room with all the facilities needed. Convenient location for Downtown and the Conference center.
- 5/5
Clean, affordable, friendly staff. Older building kept up, good for Toyota Ctr/ concerts.
- 5/5
Victor was super efficient and friendly and made us feel like home. I recommend everyone to stay at Hotel Athens if they visit Houston anytime. Rooms are very clean, and all the local convenience stores are nearby
- 4/5
The only negative was a noisy air conditioner. Difficult for me to sleep. Everything else was fine. Newly renovated with complete kitchen facilities in the room. Oh and a cold water dispenser on the entry floor.
- 5/5
I have stayed here at least twice, and the recent renovations have made it much improved since the first time. As a "clean freak", I can find missed spots etc even in the finest of hotels... and the Athens Hotel ranks just as highly as they do in this regard. The real stand-out is the service though - the friendly staff are excellent.
- 3/5
The door to the restroom wouldn't close. No Continental breakfast. And had to pay for parking. Beds are full size not queen. But great location might use again and just request a different room.
- 5/5
staff is really nice and welcoming to the place. the suite is small and SO nice for the price. small little kitchen was the icing on the cake for me
- 5/5
We came here for the Enhypen concert in Toyota center and it was less than 5 minutes of a walk. Super convenient and love that the room has a kitchen to cook. The staff was super friendly, special thanks to Victor. Will definitely be coming back and recommending this gem!!
- 5/5
great staff!
- 5/5
The room was nice!
- 5/5
Victor was the best! Super friendly and accommodating. He truly made us feel like family. The location was ideal for downtown events. We will definitely stay her next time we are in town. Thank you!
- 4/5
This hotel is nice and front desk is awesome. The area is great for downtown, but paid parking only unless you find free street parking.
- 5/5
What truly stood out was Victor’s attentiveness—he did not let me carry my own luggage to the room and made sure I was completely comfortable and informed about all the room details. His helpfulness and genuine hospitality are exactly the reasons why I would gladly return to this hotel again and again. Even the next morning, when he saw me, Victor graciously offered me morning beverages. This level of personal attention and awesome customer service made my stay exceptional. Thank you, Victor, for going above and beyond!
- 1/5
Parking was blocks away and an extra fee. Room smelled like mold. No hot water in the morning. When we checked in we waited for service etc
- 5/5
Great location
- 5/5
It was. All great service since I got there..no complains all good all around
- 5/5
Rooms are freshly renovated with new appliances and fixtures. So new the oven still has a pamphlet in it. Real thick comforter and more pillows than Ive ever seen in a hotel room. Well temperature controlled and the water pressure is no joke! Victor the counter guy is very nice and super helpful. Im not sure about the history of the building but say hi to Mr. Casper the spirit with the handlebar mustache for us... he's very curious about us 3 weird comic con ladies but was benign. He likes the fan to stay on. 😘
- 5/5
Me and my husband choose to stay at this hotel simply due to the location. It was extremely close to event we were in town for. We only stayed one night and at first glance we almost didn't t check in. The outside looks sketchy but let me tell you, it was great. The room was clean, no weird smells or sounds. I'm autistic and was very worked about being overstimulate with sounds and smells that come with older buildings. The staff were very helpful, the inside doesn't match the outside. All new appliances and the mirror in the bathroom was everything, I'm actually ordering one for my home cause it was amazing! I can't even describe the features the mirror had. It was small but cute and comfortable and intimate. It was seriously perfect. So glad we chose to stay. Definitely will be back
- 3/5
Check in was quick and easy. Pretty hard to find if you’re not looking hard for the sign on the building. Parking is 2 blocks away from building, rooms are small and you can hear the cars on the road right outside the window. Bed is comfortable and staff is very friendly.
- 5/5
Went to a concert at the Toyota center. Super short walk and didn’t have to deal with traffic afterwards. Had some last minute changes with my room and the guy working the front desk was super helpful. Would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
This hotel is just a couple of blocks from the Toyota Center and the House of Blues. Although an older property, it is very well maintained.
- 5/5
Front desk people were very helpful
- 5/5
We had a last minute housing issue while traveling and booked here in a rush. The staff was so accommodating and friendly! Easy walk to convention center and lots of restaurants and bars. Definitely not the most modern place, but it worked for a few nights. Also has a full kitchen which is super convenient!
- 1/5
Water broke in toilet. No hair conditioner. Loud air conditioning noise. Very noisy from street after midnight. No elevator. Parking is far away.
- 4/5
The staff, especially John (I think the owner) was sooooo sweet and kind and helpful. Look, this place is not the Ritz Carlton, but I’d stay here again just simply because of how kind and nice the staff was. You can tell that they are family run and operated and that they try their best with what they’ve got. And location and price can’t be beat! If you’re looking for a retro hotel/motel experience that won’t disappoint, I HIGHLY recommend! :) I’ll be staying here again.
- 2/5
The room itself was ok. Things looked clean but in the bathroom there was no hand soap and there was a hole in the wall that had been haphazardly repaired. The in suite kitchen was fine. I saw a bug crawling on the wall and all of the cutlery/cookware was just thrown in the cabinets. At one point on my second day my key stopped working and when I went down to the front desk the lady “working” there couldn’t fix it. She didn’t actually work there, she was just there helping out the owner and didn’t actually know how to do anything. The owner called the maintenance guy to go let me in the room from the dumpster which was just our back and it took him 15 minutes to get back inside. When I got back that night it was still broken, even though it was supposed to be fixed and when I went down to ask why it didn’t work I got scolded for putting my key next to the phone. The room was enough to get me through but after I didn’t feel the safest, but that could be my own anxieties. Everything in the room felt worn out and the tv didn’t work that well. The only thing that would make me stay again would be if everything around the Toyota center was sold out
- 1/5
Terrible experience, no toilet paper, breakfast yogurt expired.
- 4/5
The goal was to be close to Toyota center, and the mission was accomplished. Got to taste one of the best burgers in my entire life, too, at craft burgers. Look it up
- 5/5
Good service and good people service
- 1/5
they lied about free parking; they wanted to charge me to park in a sketchy off-property lot during the check-in process and when I showed them the email confirmation from expedia saying that I would be given a parking voucher when checking in, the guy got super upset at me and demanded the room key back and refused to let me stay there after all even though I had prepaid for the room which was advertised to include a parking voucher. I asked what does voucher mean but the guys was so mad, screaming at me and threatening to shoot me if I did not leave the premesis so I left and the front desk guy (who threatened me) was following me on my way out the door so I kicked the door shut behind me to prevent him from continuing to pursue me. when i called expedia customer service to ask for a refund they called the hotel who claimed they had filed a police report against me for supposedly damaging their door somehow, and that they were refusing to issue a refund so expedia told me the only option I had was to call the hotel to ask them for a refund but i was not willing to do this because of the death threats that the front desk guy made against me so then expedia said my only other option was to dispute the card charge with my bank.
- 4/5
Easy to Uber there and ok to walk in daytime but perhaps not at night. Must use stairs to access rooms. Think more European hostel.
- 5/5
Clean bathroom and bedding. Would stay again Plus room had a kitchen that I didn’t think I would have, was a nice perk
- 1/5
Not good and expensive WiFi and tv is not working
- 2/5
The hotel is too old, and the bed smells like it has been used by other people. For the price, it's better to spend an extra $20 and go for better options. I don't recommend it.ptions. I don't recommend it.
- 5/5
Second time staying here no problems a little out dated but it’s a whole vibe staff is helpful as well.
- 5/5
Front desk is awesome I will be back again much love from Baesick the breakdancer
- 5/5
Highly recommend this place. Especially if you are seeing a show at The House of Blues. Super close and cool places to eat and drink.
- 1/5
0 amenities. Then the parking was 2 blocks away for 25 but they a lot connected to the hotel for 5 that they dod t mentioned until after i paid. The only thing it met was convenience.
- 2/5
I left my wallet on the counter while checking out and someone stole it. The security camera was/is not working per staff (and reportedly it’s been this way for some time. The lady staff member is Great! I found a dead water bug and roach under the nightstand near the window.
- 5/5
Very family friendly and personable service.
- 5/5
When i arrived, i was informed that i had requested dates a month later. OH THE HASSEL OF CALLING. However, the staff immediately called Hotels. Com and straightened it all out. WOW HOW MUCH MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR. It made my stay lesss stressful. So thank you for all you did
- 1/5
Bad
- 5/5
It is an older property, but it's very nice and clean. We didn't encounter any issues. For being in downtown Houston, you can't beat the price; it's right next to a parking lot that is only $5 for overnight. The staff was very friendly.
- 2/5
This hotel is an older hotel , no elevator you will need to go the stairs to the room. Parking is far from the hotel, and had to pay 25.00
- 2/5
I was charged US$40 not foreseen in the reservation. The hotel owner charged me US$25 a day for a parking lot far from the hotel, lying that other parking lots were much more expensive. They were cheaper. The hotel owner only showed up at reception around 9:00, so there was no breakfast when I needed to leave the hotel before that time.
- 2/5
They charge extra to check in. Bathroom was dirty. No phone in the room. The classes that where used where not cleaned and just put back on the self. The toilet was loose on the base. Plus a white residue was on the seat of the toilet and floors. Problems with the TV.
- 1/5
Not refund , didn’t stay due to cockroaches
- 4/5
The Staff were nice and very helpful.
- 5/5
Had my doubts when I walked in. But ended up being an ok place to stay. Owner and staff were very nice. Rooms were very clean. Parking off site was not to far I will stay again
- 1/5
The worst place, there are just two persons or one and they didn’t cleaned the room.
- 5/5
John and Jasmin were very helpful and hospitable in getting us in at a late hour and out early. Thank you for taking care of us in Houston!
- 4/5
Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Building a little tired but room was clean and sleep was had.
- 4/5
Hotel staff is awesome! I would stay here again in a pinch but honestly there is better facilities
- 1/5
The property manager was very kind and sweet. The facilities were very out dated. My room was clean but it still was a very uneasy feeling. Ice machine was full of mold no ice. the carpets were very old i did not let my feet touch them. blinds were broke and dirty. Fan full of dust. I made it the weekend mainly because it was no refund BUT I will never stay again and do not recommend. There were dirty used towels in my room also.
- 4/5
I was pleasantly surprised at how well this went. I originally got a message from the hotel saying that there would have to be a $100 deposit but they didn't clarify that if you have credit and ID, you don't have to worry about that so if you get that message, disregard it. Room was nice. No elevator so make sure you're don't have issues with stairs. Nice room. Had a fridge, microwave, cupboard and even some dishes that I was able to use for my leftovers
- 4/5
Amazing
- 5/5
Ann was very friendly and helpful to me, I'll be coming back just because of her smile!
- 5/5
.
- 1/5
We did not even stay. We ended up leaving the property at 2:00 AM to drive the hour and a half home.
- 3/5
The beds were horribly stiff. They provided no shower soad for the first 2 days and the extra sanitation fee seemed excessive. And the parking was 2 blocks away.
