Reviews
The hotel has a prime location in the center of downtown Austin, close to entertainment and nightlife. The staff is generally friendly and helpful. However, the noise from the bar/club below the hotel is a common complaint, affecting sleep quality. The cleanliness and maintenance of the facilities, particularly the bathrooms, are also areas of concern.

Very affordable especially if you need a quick overnighter. Comfort level depends on what other guests are booked for the same night. Some nights are very quiet, others noisier.

It was amazing that’s the only word I can think of to describe the experience
- 4.5/5
This hostel is really comfortable. It has all the kitchen utensils, the beds are comfortable (you can sit up in a bottom bed), and the location is fantastic. The fridge could be bigger.
- 4.5/5
Wonderful stay as always. The bunk with the individual fans, curtains, and outlets is great. Noise, but that is part of being in the middle of the exciting of downtown Austin
- 4/5
Excellent location. Noisy, but I had expected that, and it is clearly advertised that it is above a bar. There are ear plugs available from reception. Bin in my room could have been changed a little more frequently and bathroom floor mopped a little more frequently.

L O C A T I O N L O C A T I O N !!!!!! Not the worst thing in the world but in my room (204) it was very cold ... also, I knew before going, the club downstairs rocks out very loud (but PROMPTLY CUTS IT OFF @ 2AM).

Great Location A little noisy from the music downstairs till 2am, but I had earl plugs so it was fine.
- 5/5
This place is extremely well run. It’s clean. The showers are nice and the rooms have excellent air-conditioning. I’ve stayed here several times, and it’s much nicer than the budget motels down the street. If you’re a solar traveler, I highly recommend staying here.

Location if you want to be downtown was great, the speakeasy in basement was cool. Nice staff. comfy beds and secure locked f/m dorm room. You could hear the bass from downstairs untill 2 am.. I didnt get into bed until 1am tho and used earplugs. I was also on top floor so wasnt that bad. The womens washroom had a bathroom stall that coulda used a garbage change. But all in all it was good! I only noticed male staff.

Great location. Free laundry.

First time staying at a hostel, was a good experience in a nice location.
- 4/5
Good place, but the bathroom feels a little bit outdated.
- 4/5
Will stay here again
- 5/5
A few notes might be either adding curtains for the top bunks as well or maybe a small light like the fans. Thanks again. Enjoy your visit.
- 3/5
Loud music playing until 2 AM from the bar downstairs. No lights in the bunk. Rather dirty, but great location.
- 5/5
Clean room. Helpful staff
- 5/5
Nice!
- 4/5
Clean, friendly
- 5/5
Great place to stay for a quick weekend trip to downtown. The bar downstairs was convenient so was the location. Staff was very friendly!
- 5/5
Nice place for a hostel, there can be some questionable people in the area outside the place at times but it’s more so the city itself. Would certainly stay here again when I return
- 5/5
Perfect hostel in terms of amenities, staff, guests, location. A bit pricier than European hostels but well worth it.
- 5/5
second time staying them and i absolutely love how convenient it is towards the moody center and the austin convention center, and very affordable for the downtown area.
- 5/5
I enjoy staying in hostels and this is an excellent place. My second stay here. Always gave a good experience. Friendly staff and nice people staying there. I like the organized activities.

Thank you!

Awesome hostel downtown ATX!! There's a bar area behind the bookcase with live music & great atmosphere (bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper). You get a $5 token to use at the bar at checkin. Beds are really comfy and have a locker underneath. They sell locks for $10, or you can rent one for $2/day. Beds have 2 blankets, 2 huge pillows, a towel, a fan, & outlets. Kitchen is stocked and there are a few places to sit & watch the downtown traffic. Washer/dryer on 2nd floor. Downtown is right outside!! The only con is there were no privacy curtains on the bottom bunks. Definitely recommend this place.

Julia (from France) was extremely helpful when I lost my phone. The a/c was brilliant for the scorching hot weather.

- 5/5
I had an AMAZING stay at Firehouse. The warm atmosphere, helpful staff, and comfy beds made it a great experience. The lounge beneath is hostel was also so convenient. I can’t wait to come back!
- 5/5
Love that its right on 6th street. Staff really friendly. Met cool people from around the world.
- 5/5
Firehouse Hostel was a fantastic place to stay! The location is perfect—right in the heart of everything, with easy access to great bars, food, and live music. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere had a fun, welcoming vibe. The historic building adds a lot of charm, and the hidden speakeasy behind the bookshelf was such a cool touch. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, and great value. Would definitely stay here again!
- 4/5
Some notes.. I wasn’t aware it’s an all ages hostel so there was a wide range of ages in the shared room. Also we had a disruptive guest in the room and it wasn’t clear how to circulate concerns/security.
- 5/5
This is a great place to stay.
- 5/5
The staff is professional and friendly Really nice to stay here.
- 5/5
It's really nice and the staff is professional.
- 5/5
The property was overall great for the price! The staff were nice, as was the speakeasy/ bar directly attached. It was pretty clean (beds, bathroom) and maintenance issues were quickly addressed. The rooms did smell kind of bad/ musty/ humid, but just from the fact that there were 6 people in that space. I would definitely stay again!
- 4/5
Not bad with good location
- 5/5
It was nice
- 5/5
It was my first time in a hostel, and it was a good experience. If i were to come back to Austin for the same event I attended, I would for sure come back.
- 5/5
This was my first hostel stay and I loved it!
- 1/5
Bedbugs were found on my bed and i had to wake up to put my clothes and bagpack into the dryer to prevent bedbugs from spreading to my home. The girl said she refunded my night stay but she didnt.
- 5/5
A little issue in the beginning with the availability with my bed, but it got resolved really quickly. Amazing customer service. Really great location, for the price.
- 5/5
Looks like it used to be a fire department
- 5/5
The stay was good and the staff was very friendly.
- 5/5
It's very close to entertainment
- 5/5
Its very nicee.
- 5/5
Really good location and the room delivers against what is expected
- 4/5
The hostel is in a very central, great location close to 6th street. The check-in process was easy and they were able to hold my bags since i got in early. There is a kitchen area and shared bathroom with 2 women's toilets and i believe 3 showers. The room was standard fare 8-bed hostel but it was comfortable and i was able to take a midday nap before dinner. The biggest complaint: the hostel is above a bar/club, which might be great for hangining out-- but the music and vibrations were SO loud until 2am that i could not sleep. You could feel it in the room/bed. I had earplugs too so it was less about volume and more about not being able to get away from FEELING the music! Made for a tough time when i had to get up at 4am for my flight!
- 4/5
I loved the style of the hotel, the beds were clean and comfortable. But the shower was dirty.
- 5/5
Lovely staff. Will definitely stay here again
- 4/5
First time. Different, but it worked for me. I think it’s a cool option, convenient and inexpensive. Thank you.
- 4/5
Friendly and nice staff!
- 5/5
It was good
- 2/5
And I paid 50 dollar for "sleeping" in bunk bed in a dorm, ridiculous! Really a shame! In Holland we call this geldklopperij
- 5/5
Really the only option, prime location in the center. By all the nightlife and restaurants. Walkable to the university and capital. Easy 15 min bus to parks. Great WiFi, comfy beds although the pillow is flat. Bathrooms fine. Kitchen was hangout area and it had the basics. Staff was good.
- 5/5
It was quiet and respectful and friendly
- 5/5
Staff very friendly, sociable environment and amenities close by
- 5/5
Cool
- 3/5
The curtains are not blackout, so it’s light in the room at night. It’s also quite loud- I was on the second floor at the front of the building, so there was lots of street noise during the night, as well as noise from the bar below. A girl in the room was consistently inconsiderate with noise (I guess this is the risk in any hostel, unfortunately). Female shower block seemed a little run down- it needs more space to hang toiletry bags/put belongings and every shower cubicle should have a basket to put your shower items. There was nowhere private to dress outside the cubicle once you’d showered. The area: within walking distance to Congress Ave Bridge, Texas Capitol, 6th St, bus stop from the airport, and Flixbus/Greyhound stop. Lots of homeless in the area, but I felt safe enough walking around on my own. Staff at the hostel were ok, but not overly friendly. There was no info on things to do in the area. When I asked, I was just told to look at what’s on the walls in the stairwell (historical images of locations in Austin)- wasn’t very helpful. The most affordable option I could find in Austin, by far, so would likely stay again just based on that. But it’s definitely a budget stay, and not one designed for true rest or comfort.
- 5/5
Great amenities and clean environment. Friendly desk staff and interesting guests. Must recommend!
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
Excellent staff & service.
- 4/5
Great hostel for meeting and partying with others from all over. Howie was super helpful at every juncture. Just be ready for some noise on weekends up to 2am as hostel is located right above a speakeasy.
- 5/5
Overall cleanliness was very good. The men's bathroom on the 2nd floor had one of two stools out of order my entire 2 day stay but did not present a 'personal' problem. ;)
- 5/5
My first hostel experience was totally positive. Great venue, very well run and a great facility to meet fellow travellers. Will be returning here next time I stop over in Austin.
- 4/5
In the middle of downtown so convenient for some nightlife and restaurants in the area
- 4/5
It needs some more privacy, maybe some curtains on the bed so the people doesn’t stare at you while your are sleeping. I stayed in some hostel that had some like curtains on the bunk beds and it gives you more privacy. Loud music till 12am maybe later than that, if you sleep early you may encounter some trouble there, since they have a bar and the music it’s loud.
- 5/5
Very cool place
- 3/5
AC doesn’t keep the building cool. Loud if you’re on the second floor with live band in bar. Bathrooms are dirty and lots of disrepair. Sink didn’t work, broken parts in shower, leak from the ceiling in bathroom for multiple days that they didn’t seem to have a plan to fix.
- 3/5
Some bathroom facilities were out of order and dorm room lacked ventilation. Staff was polite, but not overly welcoming. A nice place to meet other travellers though.
- 5/5
It was a great stay! This property was in an ideal location right off the 6th street music district. Walked all around downtown including to the capital.
- 1/5
Very poor soundproofing and on site bar is open and loud very late to the point where youre given ear plugs....you'll still feel the hesvy vibrations and hear it. This place is borderline impossible to actually sleep at
- 5/5
Location to central austin.
- 5/5
Great place to hostel.
- 4/5
Nice, quiet, central location. Has a nice music-oriented bar associated with it AND has computer access.
- 2/5
Very noisy. Several faucets did not work. Could not tell the difference between homeless folks or guests. Really didn't feel safe.
- 5/5
I would like to say Matt was so professional and understanding. Sorry that he is leaving. Hopefully you can hire someone like him to replace him.
- 5/5
The staff here is very supportive and friendly. I met a lot of amazing people at this hostel and would recommend it to anyone. There are a few things such as the bathroom sinks that need repairing but besides that the showers and common spaces are generally clean. Would highly recommend this place because of it's affordability and how close it is to 6th Street (the party area). Giving this a 10/10
- 5/5
Good
- 5/5
I loved it
- 5/5
The best hostel in Austin
- 5/5
I stayed here for 4 nights and my experience with them was nothing less than great. The rooms were great and the common lounge area was perfect. The only bad thing I found was the men showers being extremely dirty. Looked like no one has cleaned it in weeks. They should have someone clean them ate last once a week. Other than that, everything was amazing.
- 5/5
The price is good and the staffing
- 2/5
The Male bathrooms on the floor were under construction and the second floor shower had zero water pressure! The rooms were almost spotless, bathrooms deffently, required sandals. Also, don't forget your room key after hours as the room doors shut behind you with zero access to a new key. Bar in the hostel is amazing.
- 5/5
I mean you get what you expect from a $40 hostel.
- 5/5
It was really great.
- 3/5
I didnt like there beinf several men on the rood outside of our window fhis morning at 8 AM, couldnt sleep anymore so we got up amd left a lot earlier than we had initially planned. Was vsry annoyed and tired.
- 5/5
Easy access. Great location. No hassle. Will be back.
- 5/5
This is nice place to stay. Price is great and it is in walking distance of 6th st. 👍
- 5/5
I was in town for business and prefer the hostel environment to an isolated hotel room. It did not disappoint me, as my spare time was filled with lively conversations and discussions with other patrons as well as the friendly staff. I forgot to bring a padlock and they provided one for what I thought was a reasonable price ($5). Bed was as comfortable as could be expected for price point, and I was happily surprised to see that it came with clean sheets, two pillows and a blanket (temperature was spot on for comfort so I didn't use the blanket). Only thing to be aware of is if you have a rental car there is no on-site parking. There are half a dozen parking garages within a quarter of a mile, but the 24 hour price will exceed the cost of the same time staying at the hostel. Considering that most people are not here on business, I'm guessing that the parking is irrelevant. The location is possibly the best in Austin TX - it is smack in the middle of the historic downtown. You can easily walk to most places, and I can't imagine a more ideal location for anyone without a car. I stayed three nights and left happy.
- 5/5
This place is in such an awesome location. Literally walking distance from 6th street. Also very cozy and an amazing place to stay with friends. I’d definitely come back next time I’m in Austin.
- 4/5
The two workers there are an interesting duo that are keeping the life with the hostel alive during current world affairs. With their safety precautions, knowledge & kindness, they made me feel safe & welcome during my stay!
- 1/5
We showed up to check in to the hostel only to be told by the maintenance person that they were closed. We had driven about 10 hours and were looking forward to checking in and getting something to eat. NO LUCK! We had to find another place to say. This hostel is in a pretty sketchy area of town and in the end we are glad it didn't work out but would have been nice to be notified.
- 5/5
Very friendly people comfortable place to stay
- 5/5
Room was comfortable and clean, staff was lovely and helpful, the speakeasy is rad.
- 5/5
Friendly. Mystery bookcase. Short walk to 6th street.
- 5/5
This hostel is great, very convenient and comfortable.
- 4/5
It’s a great to stay, it’s affordable, It’s in a great location near the action, it’s clean, the beds are very comfortable and the staff is very nice and helpful. There is a bit of an issue noise because you can hear the street traffic, as well as people having conversations from outside. So bring earplugs that should take care of it. If there is one thing that I could contribute is that you should have girls dormitory, men’s dormitory and possibly a couples dormitory style setting. When I arrived I was matched with two guys in the same dormitory, it was quickly corrected And I was very happy about that. Overall I would stay there and would recommend others to stay at the Firehouse Hostel.
- 5/5
I truly enjoyed my stay it was my first stay at a hostel and this was a historic stay at an 1885 firehouse. The location is perfect and Racheal and Jared were exceptional at making you feel at home. The lounge behind the book shelf holds lovely live music and custom cocktails! SIMPLY A LOVELY STAY.
- 5/5
lack of decent breakfast , not even leftoevers
- 1/5
Here’s a fact about this hostel: It is filthy dirty. Like never cleaned dirty. Loud, rude staff and just very poor quality overall. Totally not worth the price. Can’t get over how dirty this place is. The room is small, stuffy & smells. Never again. ( I’m not sure who writes those good comments but this is the reality)
- 5/5
Great location. All the staff were helpful and friendly. I had a private room which was a converted loft apartment, so I had the whole 4th floor to myself! The bed was super comfortable and a view that I never wanted to stop looking at. The bathroom had a shower as big as a walk-in closet. Everything super clean and beautiful. Thank you to all the staff and fellow travelers I met along the way!
- 5/5
I stayed in the suite. So I didn't share amenities but my stay was great. Loved the late check-out and Jared at the front was a phenomenal host!
- 3/5
This place need some deep cleaning needed especially in the dorm areas. You could tell there was dirt on the side of the bunkbeds and I have no idea when was the last time they wipped things down. You could tell it was dirty especially because EVERYONE in my 8 bed dorm was stuffy the whole time we would be there. Everyone was constantly sneezing and coughing through out the night. I also felt like it was really expensive for what it was. This experience also made me realize how important sleep and resting are while traveling because it was hard to do when you are sharing a room with 8 strangers. Glad I did it and I met some cool people but would I do it again, probably not.
- 4/5
Didnt like the beggers..
