Reviews
The Big Texan Motel offers a unique, fun, and rustic experience with a convenient location next to the Big Texan Steak Ranch. Guests appreciate the easy check-in process, clean rooms, and comfortable beds. However, some guests have concerns about the noise from the interstate, the quality of the mattresses, and the lack of human interaction during check-in.

Super cute hotel. The lady at the front desk was very nice. The steak house on property is great.
- 5/5
A fun hotel with good amenities. The only downside was the fact the pool could do with a clean.
- 5/5
Great Steaks!!
- 5/5
It’s very cute and nicely done. A total experience😃 also there were plenty of washing machines!! Just overall a very nice place to stay!! Pool was beautiful as well!!
- 5/5
Amazing place to stay, loved the Western motif. Ate at the restaurant, the prime rib was excellent.
- 5/5
Fun place to stay. On Theme with Texas country vibe. Steakhouse was so good! Everyone so friendly. We'll stay again if nearby again.
- 5/5
This is a fun stop with a great restaurant next door. Highly recommend it.
- 5/5
Loved it
- 5/5
Staff (Dee) did an outstanding job of getting us in the room we needed. The room was very clean and the area was guilt and it felt safe. There is no continental breakfast but there are places close by. There is a restaurant on site that has a great atmosphere and great food.
- 5/5
At least with this place you know exactly what to expect! The pet fee was $25, they do allow pets at the restaurant too! As long as they will stay under the table and not bark. Ours did great! Thankfully!!! Anyway, a good night's sleep and a decent shower. We would stay here again.
- 2/5
Will never go back. Even the food next door was awful.
- 5/5
We have come to the Big Texan hotel every year as we have family in Texas since about 1990 and have never been disappointed. We made the mistake of staying at another hotel this year was only there an hour horrible stay. Went back to the Big Texan. Won't do that again. We will continue to use The Big Texan
- 4/5
Second time to stay here. We actually just like it for the charm and quirkiness.
- 5/5
Hotel stay was wonderful we checked in to the restaurant waited for our table never got a text tbT our table was finally got seated the foo was food was fantastic..
- 5/5
It was great having a reastrant on the property
- 5/5
Great place, I’ve stayed several times. It’s a fun place and the rooms are unique. The dated part of the rooms is part of the charm.
- 5/5
Room was clean very unique decor.
- 5/5
Good location Good food
- 5/5
The cutest country hotel ever. I want to come back to Amarillo just to stay here again!
- 2/5
The beds are too firm and uncomfortable. AC is noisy. No breakfast. This place is overhyped. Better lodging options are available in this area.
- 4/5
We really enjoyed our stay at the Big Texan Hotel. It has a great location. The whole vibe was a real Rt 66 " expierence. The room had a nice Texas flare. The only dissapointment was that there wasn't any kind of breakfast. It would have been nice to even have maybe a donut to curb the appetite. The ideal would be to get a guest discount at the Big Texan restaurant for breakfast! But overall it was good!. We would stay there again.

A couple of little things could be improved — our pillows were a bit lumpy and the window shutters didn’t fully close. We also had another guest try to get into our room, although I’m sure they had just got mixed up with their room number! Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Amazing route 66 hotel. Very nicely decorated and well maintained. The steakhouse attached was phenomenal as well.
- 3/5
Conveniently located directly next door to the Steakhouse! Offers a pool & laundry services. Front desk receptionist was very patient and helpful! The property is very unique offering horse stalls and parking for trucks as well. Overall, the property is a bit tired and needs some updating. Pool area needs some umbrellas to get out of the hot sun.
- 5/5
An absolute must for Route 66 travellers! A real novelty part of our American road trip and cannot recommend enough. We are a family of five and stayed for one night, going to the restaurant in the evening (best steak my Husbands ever had). The themed rooms are really cool and clean. Staff were great too.
- 4/5
Campy but fun.
- 4/5
This place was interesting and different. Being 110 outside made it hard to enjoy the cute building, the dining hall makes the parking lot very busy. We got a room on the second floor. It was challenging to drag our road trip gear up the stairs in the heat. But otherwise, it was quite enjoyable to stay in.
- 5/5
Amazing place so awesome!!!
- 5/5
Quirky Route 66 motor Lodge….very nice enjoyed my stay
- 4/5
Fun one night stop. Place is well used but well loved. Restaurant was great fun. Definitely recommend!
- 3/5
The pool area is in grave need of repair and clean up. The pillows were terrible and the mattress was hard. The AC unit was very noisy, which wasn’t conducive to restful sleep. The only real plus is that it is a very short walk to the Big Texan Steak Ranch, which that was a very good experience. The motel, not so much.
- 5/5
Fun kitchy tourist heaven
- 4/5
Dislikes: seems the Big Texan Restaurant has dipped its toe into the hotel business with a nice building but the current model of 'remote' staffing isn't the best. I'm fine with online check in for a room door code.Your option for a front desk is a remote phone number which is the same number for the restaurant and other Big Texan ventures. No front desk staff overnight nor either of the two mornings we were there. Phone receptionist (after working through the various prompts) told us someone would not be at the front desk to help until noon! We were told we would be contacted to resolve our need but we were never contacted nor was the need resolved.
- 3/5
If you like graffiti all over the door and walls, no where to sit, because there are no chairs or a table, having to push a set of wooden half doors every time you need to use the bathroom, and wondering if the bathtub is going to separate when you step in, this is your hotel. Otherwise, I would eat at their restaurant and stay anywhere else!
- 5/5
So cute! The perfect little stay to get a decent night sleep while on a roadtrip to CO
- 5/5
Cute as could be Not the best bed but it was nice l
- 5/5
Clean room and the front desk worker was extremely nice. Neatly decorated and great for a 1 night stay while traveling.
- 4/5
We came in late and love that you can check in online and they give you the code to the door so you don’t even have to go to the front desk room was very clean very nice but property is a little rundown and the restaurant next-door was OK. Nothing special.
- 5/5
Great connected bedrooms for the kids and my husband and me. Convenient off the interstate. We liked going to The Big Texan restaurant next door. Great for the price. Fun little rooms that fit exactly what we needed.
- 5/5
It was pleasant
- 5/5
I could not ask for a better place to stay. Pet friendly at a low rate. They have a fenced in space for dogs and also a place for horses. A pool. The rooms are very clean. Soft sheets - I was impressed. And then to go have an excellent meal and a drink right next door after traveling all day. What more could you ask for. 😎🌵
- 5/5
Perfect . Will stay again when in the area. Super cute
- 5/5
Definitely definitely why you need highly recommend got a great price great Location great experience
- 4/5
Rooms we clean an AC worked well. The in room coffee is a joke. On site Restaurant and bar were good but I did not care for their brewery beer and stuck with Modelo. The bath room bath tub had a small run all the time.
- 5/5
Great one stop for all of our needs while driving across the country.
- 5/5
This is always a fun & safe place to stay!
- 4/5
wonderful, as always!!!!!!
- 5/5
Very cute decor. Comfortable and quiet.
- 5/5
Loved being near Big Texan Steak Ranch. Cute room & clean. Helpful front desk
- 3/5
Site looks and is worn. Fixtures old. Ac could not keep up with heat. Graffiti in rooms seems encouraged and distracting
- 5/5
Try out the restaurant
- 4/5
Great experience. Amazing staff! Room was clean, cool and quiet!
- 5/5
Convenient and clean
- 5/5
Great place to stay on Route 66, we were looking for a break from the big chain hotels for a change. We would stay again.
- 4/5
Lady at the front desk was very friendly, checking in was quick. Room was clean, we didn't get the updated room but had a fun interior. It was so nice and convenient to the restaurant. You do hear the freeway noise, AC helps block noise. There is some outside maintenance that could be done. I would stay again.
- 5/5
Had a great time at the steak house.
- 5/5
We had a good stay. Check in lady was very nice and helpful. The room was western theme and spotless. The beds comfortable and cool air conditioning. Also it is right across the parking lot from the steakhouse which was fun. We requested a first floor and received it. And parking right outside door. It was a fun experience.
- 5/5
Loved it!!! Will definitely be back
- 5/5
The hotel was so unique! Love the theme of the rooms and decor. The beds were comfy, coffee delicious, air works wonderful and nice hot showers. No complaints! Love the door and all the visitor messages.
- 3/5
Room was nice. Shower was great. Right by the big Texan which we enjoy eating at during our travels. Room had a fly problem. Spent a lot of the night swatting. We could not figure out where they were coming from.
- 5/5
The motel is right next to door to the big Texan steakhouse so is extremely handy for that. It’s an older motel but nice and clean and you can drive right up to the door All the hotels along that highway are a bit noisy but I found it much cleaner than some of the newer motels I’ve stayed in close by and the staff much friendlier
- 4/5
I can’t help but like this place! A little old, a little beat up, but that’s part of the charm! I’ve stayed here 4-5 times. It’s fun!
- 3/5
Both rooms were covered in ants! Couldn't even keep personal items in the bathroom due to ants! Hard to brush your teeth and wash your face when the sink is covered with ants!! Ice machine wasn't working! Front desk gal was super nice when I checked in
- 5/5
Great location, helpful staff. Excellent hotel!
- 5/5
Very clean rooms. Bed was very comfortable. Pool was nice. Could use some shade by the pool.
- 4/5
This was a quick overnight halfway stop on our vacation. Dinner at the restaurant was fun, make sure to make a reservation! The room was clean, a little dated. The ac could be a little bit more powerful but otherwise a decent stay.
- 5/5
Super cute clean room, staff super nice and helpful, pool cleaned on the morning before opening and a good temperature. Ate at the steak house for dinner and had a lovelyeal and time
- 5/5
Very good place with an old rustic feel. AMAZING shower with lots of water pressure and hot water!
- 4/5
Rooms were clean. Staff was very helpful
- 2/5
Filthy. Old.
- 4/5
Loved it and will stay again!
- 5/5
Stayed at the Big Texan with my kids and wife and we loved it! Loved the themed room, the pool shaped like Texas and the closeness to the restaurant. Very satisfied with our stay. Will definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We also enjoyed the bar, food and would definitely recommend! Great stop on your Route 66 trip or journey through Amarillo,
- 2/5
It was nice that it was right by the big Texan restaurant. But that’s all it was really a pretty yucky motel.
- 5/5
We love staying here. Every time we pass through, it’s a can’t miss.
- 5/5
We loved all the little finishing cowboy touches in our room. Had a terrific meal too.
- 5/5
AC was ice cold even facing the west on 105 degree day. Simple clean room with what you need. Was quiet even being right by I-40.

The room was very unique and fit a western vibe. I loved how the decor in the room looked and how clean it was. The self check in and check out was amazing as well. The downside of staying here was bugs. I found a cockroach in our room that had crawled under a gap in the front door. It ran away before I could do anything about it. I also discover that my leg had insect bites after our stay at this motel (which I discovered was bed bug bites). I most likely won't be staying here again, but it was a unique experience to say the least.
- 3/5
While the nostalgia was special and the room was very clean, there were several disappointments that made our stay unsatisfactory. The shower is an explosion of water. There is no shelving in the shower so my razor sat on the floor while my face got blasted with water each time I had to grab my shower items from the floor. The pillow was hard as a rock, and the coffee was not drinkable. I think the creamer packets sat there for years. I honestly think you’re asking way too much for a stay at this hotel. I hoping I was assigned the quirky room with the bad shower and bad pillows because we absolutely love the restaurant and would like to give it one more chance. But I definitely cannot agree with the 9.4 (exceptional) rating. The lady that checked us in was super sweet and very professional!
- 4/5
One night stay. Passing through Amarillo. Clean and comfy. Road noise. Reasonable bargain room
- 5/5
Excellent room, but bring your own soap for the shower. A sliver is provided, but doesn’t cut it.
- 2/5
Over-rated. We paid for a king suite that suppose to sleep 3 but the clerk said it was impossible to sleep 3 and offered a 2 queen bed . Very disappointing. Hole in the bathtub that was patched with pieces of vinyl floor tile that turned black around the edges . It felt like a trampoline with a hole and accident about to happen. The price we paid was definitely not worth the stay.
- 5/5
Super fun decor in the room, there is a pool and you can walk to get your steak dinner
- 5/5
Our room was spacious and well furnished. The motel amenities were great and pur stay made our destination dinner at The Big Texan super convenient.
- 4/5
Staying at the Big Texan Motel is fun and kitschy. Surprisingly the rooms were quiet overnight despite the proximity to the highway. The best hotel laundry room I have ever seen even though you had to download an app. But no need for quarters. The rooms are fun but could use a refresh.
- 4/5
It’s a funny place
- 5/5
It may look rather iffy on the outside, but thats part of the old time west charm. The room was immaculate. The bed was comfortable and we had a wonderful evening with our dinner at tha Big Texan and a short walk to our room. Thank you for the enjoyable stop on our trip.
- 5/5
Room was clean, bed was comfortable, and staff was friendly. I wish the pool had stayed open later. Restaurant was good, although the “boot” drinks are not mixed well. Or mixed at all.
- 5/5
Great place to stay
- 3/5
2 complaints The room was noisy and we had an issue with flies in our room. Room was clean but it just felt dirty outside. Staff very nice and helpful.
- 5/5
Would definitely stay again if coming through Amarillo.
- 5/5
Great experience!
- 5/5
Great Texas themed property. Last minute booking, Dee was the front desk Staff and she was excellent at her job. I ate the ribs and salad at the restaurant and watched 2 men take the all you can eat challenge. Great place to stay.
- 3/5
It’s a bit outdated and the pillows were terrible. My kids loved the old west vibe though and it was fine for one night.
- 2/5
Run down overpriced motel with no real amenities. Crummy old room, only reason to stay is it is next door to steak house which is great, but the motel we won't be back.
- 5/5
Great for a romantic getaway with your horse but don't tell your cow. The rooms have a cool Urban Cowboy vibe. The bathroom even had a whirlpool tub. The Texas shaped swimming pool was a lot of fun. I recommend the Wagyu chicken fried steak for dinner.
- 5/5
Your gal in front office is highly organized and courteous! Room was so quaint w/the Western motif! Best hot shower we’ve had in any hotel in last week! Plus the food at The Big Texan was tasty! Definitely would be back!
- 1.5/5
The bathroom shower head was dripping the entire time. The sink drained very,,,very slow. No onsite services. No worth for paying this type of price for stay. Even felt the bedsheets were not clean. The floor was very dirty.
- 3.5/5
Air conditioning was really loud, beds were not very comfortable, and sink faucet dripped
- 4.5/5
Convenient location, and right next to the Big Texan restaurant. The room was very modest compared to large 4 and 5 star chains but it had character, history, and the beds were comfortable I typically don’t like exterior entrances without elevators for safety reasons but it was fine
- 2.5/5
Easy to find Rooms were dated. A leak in the bathroom. Reported to staff
- 5/5
Fun experience. Loved the retro feeling. Pool could be cleaner.
- 1.5/5
Its easy to get to the restaurant. They did construction with jack hammering right outside my door at 8am.
- 1/5
Rustic vibe Someone tried getting in our room. The hotel gave them our room code and it was late and scary. Mo front desk people to check us in and has to call to check in.
- 4/5
Loved the room and restroom. All clean and convenient. The Texas shaped pool was not available ? so that was a huge disappointment.
- 5/5
Food was great! Staff was great, especially Dee! Absolutely nothing!
- 4/5
Very convenient to the Big Texan Steak House. Loud air conditioner
- 3.5/5
The tub dripped all night
- 5/5
I really enjoyed the themed room, western and Texan. No trashcan in the bathroom
- 5/5
None
- 3.5/5
Location Cleaner premises and dog park.
- 1.5/5
The proximity to the steakhouse next door. The outdoor pool was closed by the health department. The toilet made a weird sound all night. I had water up past my ankles when I showered because it didn’t drain properly.
- 2.5/5
Location Parking lot filthy, needs major cleaning / pressure wash. room actually clean except flies in room. Pool cloudy needs maintenance, water cloudy needs updating
- 3.5/5
Perfect Route 66/cowboy kitsch for those looking for it. The room generally was nicely updated considering the age of the original building. Easy walk across the parking lot to The Big Texan restaurant if that restaurant is a travel goal. Those bothered by noise might not like the location by a busy interstate. The bathroom was a bit dated.
- 3/5
Price is high
- 5/5
We liked it better when it wasn’t contactless check in
- 4.5/5
Loved the kitschy vibe, next door to the big Texas steak house so u can get your steak challenge on then crash hard,2nd time here & front rooms this time way nicer then back rooms, bring a sharpie & sign the back of the room door Upper level appears to be collapsing yikes! Older rooms but fun
- 4.5/5
This was a fun hotel! It was clean and comfortable, a unique place to stay!
- 4/5
Very good
